Cobble Hill
Together with Ingui Architecture, a complete gut renovation of a six story landmarked brownstone from 1895 in the most coveted neighborhood of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. After many decades of being a multiple family dwelling, the house was thoughtfully reimagined as a comfortable single-family home with a high-performance retrofit using Passive House construction and technology. The house is vibrant with fluid flow between public and private spaces. The garden level is built for teenagers and grandparents alike, with a separate kitchen and guest living space and a comfortable gaming room and mudroom for sports equipment. The parlor floor is generous comprising an open living room, dining room and kitchen with expansive new windows and doors overlooking the back deck and garden. White oak millwork in the kitchen and new white oak chevron flooring throughout create a warm, welcoming environment. A custom upholstered sofa from Nickey Kehoe and a pair of vintage Thonet bentwood chairs sit atop a custom check rug from Morocco. A modern heirloom dining table from Pinch is surrounded by vintage chairs upholstered in Josef Frank. Lighting from Beata Heuman, Urban Electric and In Common With adds color and texture from the soaring ceilings. Moroccan zellige tile is combined with marbleized wallpaper in the powder room and classic American modern tile from Heath defines the guest kitchen, mudroom and primary bathroom suite. The kid’s bathrooms are lined with bold, playful checked and striped cement tiles. The serene sleeping quarters feature plush, new and vintage rugs and a mix of modern classic furniture and custom headboards and window treatments. There is a combined home office, den and gym on the floor of the primary suite. The girls wanted bold, floral wallpapers in their rooms. My favorite space is the communal area on the children’s floor where we created the coziest, but still massive, 11-foot reading nook upholstered in performance fabric and wallpaper. The top floor loft provides abundant work and craft space for the kids and their friends and a big comfortable couch for movie nights.
